10 at night is the time for the night killer …
All the sound in house came from the living room – with the television screening teaser clips to upcoming drama shows. Archibald was sitting comfortably on the sofa. He held his newspaper in front of him, covering the television screen, and looking at the small crossword puzzle in the bottom left corner of the page, reached for his pen on the sofa arm beside him.
The first question above the crossword puzzle read: ‘Word for killing animals’. Archibald looked down at the crossword and saw nine boxes. It only took him a few seconds before he wrote down; ‘Slaughter’, with his black-inked pen.
Moving the newspaper down slightly, to use the bulb on the sealing to read the text more easily, he continued with his crossword. His eyes stopped at ‘Question 2’ as his phone lit up beside him. He put his newspaper down on the sofa and picked up his phone. His phone was a slightly older, third-generation device – with the time of ‘22:03’ being shown in a grey, squared box near the top of the screen.
